Meet the Critic: Shaquanna “Quanna” Stevens

If you love diving deep into why a movie actually works—unpacking its symbolism, its trauma, and the cultural layers beneath the script—you are in the right place.

I’m Quanna, a film critic, storyteller, and educator who has always been captivated by the power of a great narrative. I was born and raised in the Carolina. By day, I teach English IV Honors and AP Literature, guiding students through classic storytelling structures and helping young creatives develop their own voices. By night, I channel that exact same analytical passion into the screen, reviewing everything from horror and sci-fi to high fantasy and films by Black creators.

For me, film analysis isn’t about rigid academic lecturing; it’s about connecting the dots. It’s seeing how a modern psychological thriller might share DNA with classic literature like The Yellow Wallpaper, or celebrating the massive win of an independent, young filmmaker landing a major studio budget.

Beyond this blog, you can find me building community and sharing video reviews over at my channel, Her Reel Review. I started Carolina Cinema Scene to give regional cinephiles a dedicated space to connect, support our local independent theaters, and celebrate diverse, organic word-of-mouth filmmaking.

I am always open to press access, screening invitations, and new collaborative opportunities to keep spreading the love of great cinema.
